Following the current Earth incarnation, which includes the sixth dawn, the planet will transition into its next major stage of evolution, called the New Jupiter. At this point, the Earth as we know it will no longer exist.
New celestial body: The future "Earth" will be a new cosmic body, spiritually and physically different from its present form, just as the Earth today is a transformed version of the Old Moon.
Spiritualized humanity: Only the part of humanity that has spiritualized will transition to the New Jupiter. Physical matter, along with those who remain attached to it, will have been purged.
Non-physical senses: Human beings on New Jupiter will be supersensibly perceptive, receiving "spiritual impressions of tone, light, and warmth" rather than sensory ones.
Disappearance of lower kingdoms: The mineral kingdom will dissolve, and only the spiritualized aspects of the plant, animal, and human kingdoms will endure.
The seventh cultural age
Steiner also described a seventh cultural age, which will occur before the final transformation into New Jupiter.
Final battle of spiritual currents: In this final age, there will be a culmination of good and evil, with humanity splitting into groups based on spiritual development.
The "war of all against all": Before the new, spiritualized world can emerge, there will be a "terrible devastation of culture" caused by egoism. A small group of spiritually-developed people will escape this destruction, while others who have resisted spiritual evolution will be eliminated.
According to Rudolf Steiner, souls who cling to materialism and resist spiritual evolution during the Earth's stages of development are not annihilated but face a different path, separating from the spiritualized portion of humanity
. Instead of progressing to the next planetary incarnation (New Jupiter), they must continue their evolution elsewhere.
The separation of souls
The "brood of spidery creatures": During the transitional phase between Earth's current state and New Jupiter, those who resist spiritualization will be drawn to the re-descending, destructive forces of the Moon's shadow-existence. Steiner described this as becoming one with "the brood of spidery creatures" in a grotesque and hideous form.
A "terrible devastation": This resistance to evolution will culminate in a massive global catastrophe, which Steiner described as a "war of all against all" caused by pure egoism. A spiritualized remnant of humanity will escape this devastation, while the remaining materialists will be "eliminated" in this purification.
Separation from Earth's destiny: The key event for these souls is their separation from the evolutionary destiny of the Earth. Instead of joining the "Spiritualized Earth" that ascends to become New Jupiter, they will be left behind with the physical matter and the forces that are cast off.
Further opportunities for spiritualization
While these souls face a catastrophic outcome during Earth's transformation, Steiner's cosmology suggests that opportunities for spiritualization are not permanently lost.
Detached from the main stream: These souls, who failed to connect their will to the spiritual path, are described as "cast out of the spiritual realm and down into the human realm". Their consciousness, being fixated on matter, means they must continue their evolution detached from the main spiritual stream of humanity.
Different paths of development: Such souls must find alternative paths for their development, which could involve other "cosmic destinies" or planes of existence. Their eventual path is determined by their karma, but they will follow a separate, delayed track from those who evolved with the main stream.
Not annihilation, but transformation: For Steiner, the outcome is not an eternal damnation or absolute non-existence, but a forced transformation. It is a process of purification or reabsorption into the "cosmic whole" that feels like destruction but ultimately serves to lead the soul back to its divine nature.
This view contrasts sharply with more common apocalyptic scenarios, framing the "elimination" as a consequence of resisting spiritual evolution, rather than a punishment for clinging to materialism. The souls' fate is the result of their own karmic choices, requiring them to learn their lessons in a different, and far more difficult, manner.
